Capturing from Youtube

We used to use Keepvid but that site now charges for it's use.  We have found an alternative that seems to work pretty well.  I found VLC does a good job using the method described in the link at right (source), and below.

In a nutshell:

  1. copy the URL
  2. Open VLC.  Select "Media / Open Network Stream".   Paste the URL there.
  3. Click on "Tools / Codec Information".
  4. Copy the address from the bottom window in that screen: it's very long and random looking.
  5. Paste that address into a new tab on your browser.
  6. Right-click on the screen and select "save video as..."

Firefox also has a plugin that allegedly handles the issue smoothly.  I have not tried it yet.

Even better: VLC does a great job.
